Cad Yellow (Hue) | Matisse Studio acrylic paint

Given the challenges with bright yellows in previous centuries, it's surprising how gradually Cadmium Yellow gained popularity. Its adoption across the globe unfolded slowly yet steadily. First developed in 1817, it wasn't until 1820 that France saw its use as an artist’s pigment. Germany followed in 1829, the U.S. in 1842, and it finally reached England in 1846. This slow progression can be attributed to several factors. Although Chrome Yellow was known for its instability, manufacturers worked hard to promote their specific variations as "superior" despite their lack of durability. Meanwhile, Chrome Yellow’s affordability and attractive golden hue in the tube made it a popular choice. In contrast, Cadmium Yellow was expensive, and its long-term advantages were not yet understood.

The first major artist to embrace Cadmium Yellow was Monet, who used it nearly pure to depict golden willow trees beside a river, capturing the autumn sunlight. Thanks to its exceptional permanence, that yellow hue in Monet’s painting will retain its brilliance for centuries to come—unlike earlier Chrome Yellow paintings, which turn green when exposed to sunlight. Inspired by its long-adored namesake, Matisse Studio Cadmium Yellow (Hue) is a bright and versatile colour suitable for any mixing palette. Its golden yellows are commonly found in nature—whether in ripening wheat or bright flowers. Mixed with reds such as Naphthol Light or Pyrrole, it delivers intense, fiery oranges and yolky yellows, and can also "lift" ochre and earth tones, enhancing sunlight effects in natural scenes.
