Bright Orange | Matisse Studio acrylic paint

Bright orange is a brilliant sunburst colour reminiscent of light red desert sand and ripe citrus fruits. Its warm intensity derives from the vibrant pigment Pyrrole Orange, originally developed in the 20th Century for industrial applications like automotive paint and print packaging, due to its high tinctorial strength. 

Meaning “fiery” in Greek, this bold yet transparent pigment conveys emotional force and dynamism, used to great effect in the psychologically evocative works of artists such as Brett Whiteley, Francis Bacon and Edward Hopper.

Through the addition of arylide yellow and titanium white, Matisse Studio Bright Orange tempers the potency and heat of Pyrrole, introducing a rich, creamy opacity and subtle yellow bias. This makes it a versatile palette all-rounder, invoking the essence of arid landscapes and evening skies without being overpowering. 

Many scientists have studied the psychology of colour perception, theorising that orange stimulates the appetite, which is why it is commonly used in advertising campaigns. Its eye-catching appeal and vivacity also make this hue suitable for bold block colour signage and graphic imagery. When mixed with Prussian Blue, it produces lovely muted brownish-grey tones that are wonderful for warm monochromatic studies. Combined with Crimson, it creates fiery reds ideal for depicting rouged lips or lustrous fabrics. Adding Titanium White to this mix results in a range of pink, flesh-like tones suitable for portraiture, especially flushed cheeks or light skin tone highlights.
