Cadmium Free Red Light | Matisse acrylic paint

Cadmium Red pigments first rose to popularity during the early 20th Century, readily praised by artists for their vibrance and mass tonal strength. These intense, opaque new colours offered a safer alternative to highly toxic traditional pigments such as Vermillion, composed of pure mercurial sulphide.

Concerns regarding the toxicity of materials continue to evolve and remain a chief priority throughout Derivan’s manufacturing process. With artists wellbeing in mind, our traditional Cadmium range are composed of acid-washed pigments, a method that eliminates all bio-available heavy metals. 

Furthering safe practice, Derivan have developed this radiant new colour as an alternative to time-honoured Cadmium pigments. The result is a bright, boisterous light red that retains the full range of effects often attributed to Cadmium colours, without compromise to quality.

Will you be keeping the original Cadmium Red Light?

The traditional Cadmium colours will remain in our Matisse Acrylic range, alongside the new Cadmium-free suite of paints, offering several safe and outstanding solutions for discerning artists. Though Cadmium Free Red Light is a wonderful alternative to this esteemed colour, it is not a replacement. While subtle differences may exist between the new colour or pigment and its predecessor, we are very pleased with the results.
