First synthesised in the early 20th Century, Cadmium colours continue to dominate the palettes of discerning artists for their intensity, tinting strength and high lightfastness. These new red and yellow pigments were not only more vibrant than previous colourants such as Vermillion, but they were also, importantly, much safer.

Derivan’s traditional Cadmium range abides by such low-risk practices, through an acid-wash technique that eliminates all bio-available heavy metals from our pigments. Further advancing the conversation around safe material practices, this latest iteration of Cadmium-Free colours completely excludes heavy metals from the manufacturing process altogether.

These lush, effusive new Cadmium-Free colours serve as an excellent alternative to the traditional Cadmium pigments, formulated with artists wellbeing in mind, and uncompromising in quality.

Colour Mixing with Cadmium Free Orange.

Cadmium-Free Orange is a warm, fiery colour that is sure to enliven any mixing palette, emulating the lauded characteristics of traditional Cadmium Orange. This uniquely vibrant hue soars in complementary colour combinations, intermixed with blues such as Cerulean or Cobalt to produce beautiful neutrals, or set against the warm, violet-blue depths of Ultramarine in simultaneous contrast - an optical phenomenon that heightens the perceived intensity of both colours.

Though subtle variations between a new colour or pigment and its predecessor are inevitable, this new Cadmium-Free hue, along with others in the range, boasts the same robust features and quality guarantees as its striking namesake.
