Potter's Pink | Matisse Studio acrylic paint
Matisse Studio Potter’s Pink takes inspiration from its namesake Potters Pink, the metal-oxide based pigment originally designed for use in ceramic glazes. First synthesized by an unknown Staffordshire potter in the late 18th century, the colour is produced by roasting tin oxide with chromium, chalk, and minerals like quartz, resulting in a lovely muted light pink that is incredibly stable and lightfast. Also known as tin pink, this pigment originally intended for clay and kiln quickly became essential to the watercolourist’s palette for its gentle, granulating quality and durability. Despite its pleasing hue and distinctive texture, the historic Potter’s Pink was not widely adopted by artists working in mediums like oils, due to its subtlety and relatively weak tinting power compared to the bright new synthetic pigments being introduced.
Nevertheless, it has endured the fluctuations of colour aesthetics over time, and its subdued nature is now cultivated as a salve to ‘louder’ synthetic hues. Matisse Studio Potter’s Pink emulates the soft, earthy blush tones of its predecessor, as a straight blend of Naphthol Red and Titanium White. This balanced medley delivers a smooth and buttery blossom-like finish without the granulating effects of the original pigment—a feature that, while highly sought-after in watercolours, is less desirable in acrylic paints. Potter’s Pink blends beautifully with earth tones and cool blues, creating soft, atmospheric neutrals and muted pastels ideal for natural landscapes and delicate shading. The warmth and subtlety of this new hue make it an excellent choice for portrait paintings where a lighter flesh tone base and highlights are required. It also makes a wonderful addition to evocative scenes that feature transitional lighting effects.
