Permanent Green Light | Matisse Studio acrylic paint
Permanent Green Light is a relatively recent addition to the artist’s palette, originating in the 20th century. Such vivid greens were unattainable before the 19th century, largely due to the toxicity of bright pigments in dry form. It wasn’t until the rise of organic, non-toxic colours—coinciding with the post-Impressionist explosion of pastels and coloured pencils—that such shades became widely accessible. The pastel works of Degas played a crucial role in this transformation, helping pastels gain recognition as a serious artistic medium. Before his influence, pastels were limited in both range and reputation, in part because of the hazardous nature of earlier pigments. As the demand for these new, safer colours grew, paint manufacturers responded with innovative blends and pigments of varying quality.
The name “Permanent Green” historically referred to different pigments, including stable viridian-based blends and the fleeting coal tar pigment PG2. By the 1930s, it was applied to Phthalo Green—likely a marketing move to align it with viridian’s prestige. When blended with Yellow Light Hansa, it became the strikingly bright Permanent Green Light. Though rarely found in nature, this colour is common in modern life—seen in cars, house paints, ceramics, and textiles. It mixes uniquely with other pigments, creating soft pastel greens with Australian Ghost Gum, vibrant apple greens with Lemon Yellow, and deep olive tones with Burnt Sienna or Raw Umber. Permanent Green Light’s versatility makes it indispensable for artists seeking bold, contemporary hues.
