Mars Black | Matisse Studio acrylic paint

Mars Black is a synthetic iron oxide pigment that rose to prominence in the early 20th century as a more stable and non-toxic alternative to natural black pigments. Deriving its name from the Roman god of war ‘Mars’, who was associated with iron, this rich and unassuming colour displays a subtly warm, brownish undertone and is completely opaque. Despite its recent invention, Mars Black has quickly become a palette staple, suitable for both beginners and advanced acrylic painters alike.

Prized by artists for its excellent permanence and lightfastness ratings, Mars Black also offers extremely robust tinting strength, approximately 3 times that of Ivory Black. For this reason, it can quite easily overwhelm other colours, and should initially be added to mixes with caution, until its influence is understood. If you have a project that requires full coverage, Mars Black is the perfect colour for blocking out and layering.
