Aqua Green Light | Matisse Studio acrylic paint

As an ethereal, almost otherworldly colour, Aqua Green Light might seem like a contemporary shade, more fitting for haute couture fashion palettes than rooted in antiquity. However, this perception couldn't be further from the truth. This vibrant hue bears a striking resemblance to malachite, a naturally occurring copper green mineral that has been mined and coveted for over 5,000 years. Known by the ancient Egyptians as wahdj, malachite was first used in Egyptian art to represent joy, growth, fertility and regeneration. Its hieroglyph – a symbol resembling a necktie with three grains of sand underneath – reflects the significance of this colour in their culture.

Malachite's artistic use waned in the 18th century with the advent of cobalt green, which offered greater permanence but lacked intensity. Today, Aqua Green Light serves as a more vivid and versatile replacement for these earlier pigments, retaining both strength and clarity for effortless mixing. Showcasing a lively blend of white and Phthalocyanine Green (Blue Shade), the purity and permanence of this mermaid-green colour allows artists to adjust saturation with ease, softening or enhancing its range without compromising vibrancy. While traditional malachite is darker and less vivid than Aqua Green Light, it can be approximated by adding small amounts of Phthalo Green and black to the mixture.

Now considered a rare mineral, the joyous spirit of the malachite hue endures in Aqua Green Light, through its contemporary association with summer waters, shimmering pools, and elegant silks. As a mixing colour, it is exceptionally adaptable, yielding sea greens with Cobalt Turquoise, bright grassy tones with Permanent Green Light, and soft yellow greens with Nickel Titanate. Blending it with Iridescent White produces a luminous, silk-like green, while Ash Pink softens it into a gentle pastel.
