Derivan Ink - Stamping Medium

Matisse Derivan - Proudly Australian Owned and Made

MATISSE INKS BECOME MORE VERSATILE

Stamping MediumMatisse Derivan is proud to launch their latest addition to the Derivan Ink range - Stamping Medium.

Derivan Ink - Stamping Medium is a transparent paste that you can mix with either Derivan Inks or Matisse Inks to be able to use them on foam stamp pads. The Cut-n-Dry Foam stamp pad sheets are ideal for this - and cutting this into smaller sizes makes it even easier to use. A hint for cutting these is to use a quilter’s cutting wheel and ruler, and cut from the reverse side.

By mixing up to equal parts Ink with Stamping Medium, it will:

  1. Slow the drying time of the ink to allow you more time to stamp (and stop the stamp pads drying out) as the stamping medium has drying retarder incorporated;
  2. Change the viscosity of the inks to increase their tack to help ensure good coverage for the stamp - even on stamps with a larger surface areas;
  3. Allow for embossing with the tackier viscosity ensuring embossing powder adheres;
  4. Reduce colour bleeding. Due to the higher viscosity of the mixture, creating multi coloured stamp pads will be easier, and the colours are less likely to ‘bleed’ into each other. The colours will stay where they’re put and will only mix if placed so that they are overlapping, but will not bleed into each other;
  5. Make stamps easier to clean up after use.

All of these benefits make the Derivan and Matisse Inks even more versatile and highly economical as you can use the one product for so many different purposes.

Basic Instructions for use:
  1. Cut a small stamp pad from the cut and dry foam, approximately 4cm square.
  2. Mix equal parts of Matisse Ink – (colour of choice) with Derivan Ink – Stamping Medium in a shallow container, or on a plate, using a palette knife ensuring that it is thoroughly mixed.
    Hint: Use a syringe to measure out equal parts – 1ml of each will make more than enough.
  3. Load the foam stamp pad with enough of the ink mix to cover the surface, and gently pat with the palette knife to push it into the foam.  You do not want the ink mix sitting on top of the foam.
  4. Repeat until the stamp pad is loaded, ensuring even coverage.  The stamp should not have a wet look when loaded, and it will look much like other foam based stamp pads you may own.
    Hint: you will be able to see on the sides how far the ink is, when you push it down firmly with the palette knife, it should not come out the sides or the top of the foam – if it does, you have too much ink on the pad, and should blot it on a piece of kitchen paper (or colour some shapes with it).
  5. Pat the stamp pad onto your stamp ensuring an even coverage, and then firmly place your stamp on your page and press.  Note: foam stamps will not require the same pressure as rubber, or acrylic stamps.
    Hint: These stamp pads are also great for inking the edges of paper, and even as a quick and easy way to colour chipboard or other embellishments!

Ink pads made with the Cut-n-Dry foam can be easily washed out with mild soap and water for reuse/re-inking if required, or stored in a shallow airtight container, or ziplock bag, to use at a later date.

Some things that should be considered are:

  • By adding the stamping medium, you will be somewhat diluting the strength of the colour in the inks.  However the Matisse Inks are very heavily pigmented to start with, so this is not a big issue.
  • Due to the difference in viscosity of the inks and stamping medium (liquid vs. paste) you will need to mix with a palette knife, and push the medium into the inks rather than stirring.  You will be able to easily see when the medium is thoroughly mixed.
  • Ink colours can be intermixed to give you any colour stamp pad you desire.
  • While the majority of the inks are transparent, adding a small amount of white will create an exciting array of pastel inks as well.
  • Adding Iridescent Ink to many of the colours will create pearlescent inks, or metallic looking inks - which can be very interesting -   Iridescent inks work beautifully over darker cardstocks.
  • Other Matisse Derivan mediums can also be added to the mix to create interesting effects - however there should always be at least 50% of the mixture or more as ink so as not to make them overly water sensitive (of course, if water sensitivity is not an issue, they can be thinned down quite a lot more).  Adding Matt Medium to the inks for example, would make a more matt stamp pad.
  • If water sensitivity is an issue, there should be no more that a 1:1 ratio of inks to medium, however, if it is not an issue greater amounts can be added to increase the tackiness of the inks to enable heavier embossing, and slower drying times.
